Description:
Otherspace: Martian Ty/opography is a sci-fi narrative starring Jane, an earthling scientist, of cross cultural relations, (mis)representation, knowledge, and sexuality in interplanetary communication. The work draws on contemporary sources as well as archival materials in the history of astronomy. This book was chosen as the offset book of 1984 in the exhibition “Offset Artists’ Books”, Art of the Book Room, Sterling Library, Yale University, New Haven. Text includes multiple quotes from various written works on the planet Mars by multiple authors. For more detailed information see the colophon. Edition of 500. Johanna Drucker, artist's statement: " ... The idea of the book came to us in the National Air and Space Museum in DC. We were looking at images of the Mars lander and the photo caption included the phrase "Martian topography." Almost simultaneously we said aloud, "Martian TYpography." So the project began. We looked at the history of images of Mars and the corresponding evolution of conceptual understanding of that planet, its surface, character, identity. The history of imaginings and projections was intriguing, as were the images themselves ... Brad's explorations of digital capabilities expanded the project, and gave it whatever beautify and design richness it has"--Vamp and Tramp, Booksellers, LLC catalog, viewed September 12, 2014.
