Abstract:
"The Vietnam War has been commonly referred to as the 'first televised war,' for the revolutionary technology allowing video media coverage to easily reach American living rooms. However, it was the powerful imagery of single frame photography that established the iconic status of the war. The immediate access to media coverage allowed the public to have more insight into the happenings of war than ever before. This incited stronger sentiment towards the conflict and promoted anti-war agendas across the United States. For this study, the semiotics in photos from three photojournalists, Phillip Jones Griffiths, Larry Burrows, and Ronald Haeberle of the Vietnam War and their impact from 1967 onwards will be analyzed. This paper will argue that the work of these three photojournalists provided a significant contribution to the anti-war agenda and a shift in public sentiment." --Abstract
