Abstract:
"Comparing home settings in Netherlandish genre scenes with paintings of public spaces reveals the ideals of Dutch society and how they were reflected publicly and privately. Looking at the settings of the images helps establish how public and private life were defined in the seventeenth-century Netherlands and will be applied to the analysis of a pairing of images portraying private and public life. These images reflected what Dutch society holds as valuable virtues such as cleanliness, motherhood, and modesty. The audience for both pictorial types were the same: the average educated Dutch citizen. Domestic scenes will be analyzed to determine how homelife was depicted in the Netherlands during the Dutch Golden Age. This thesis will discuss how Dutch painters, in particular Pieter de Hooch, developed his audience's expectations for domesticity using the depictions of both interior and exterior settings. This thesis will primarily focus on cityscapes for public settings and home scenes for private settings. And how Pieter de Hooch's sensitivity to transitions between public and private spaces in his paintings reflected the blurring of public and private places occurring during the seventeenth century." --Abstract
