Abstract:
"The Mongolian conquest of western Asia and the Middle East along with the establishment of the Ilkhanid dynasty precipitated a cultural change within the art of the proceeding period. With the adoption of Chinese scenic elements and the natural backdrop, the treatment of space and the environment became a distinct aspect in fourteenth century Islamic art. Influenced by Chinese textiles and shaped by observational drawing, landscape paintings started to emerge in the artistic tradition. 'Landscape with a River', from the Diez Albums and 'Autumnal Landscape' from the Topkapi Saray Albums let go of traditional narrative meaning and context to instead engage the viewer through the tools of pictorial space, implicit and explicit pattern, and naturalism. This runs counter to the tradition of Islamic manuscript illumination, where these tools are utilized to help tell a story. Thus, the modern scholarship should be expanded to understand what role these landscapes would have played in the context of Ilkhanid art and society." -- Abstract
