Abstract:
"Ira Lombardia's (b. 1977, Spain) VOID exhibition at the SCAD Museum of Art delved into the demateriality of the void and incorporates technology into the experience of the physical objects presented. This created a dynamic and engaging exhibition that will be investigated further through this thesis by highlighting concepts behind the art and overarching themes found in transmedia, documentation, and aura. Lombardia references artist Yves Klein (1928-1962, France), among others, as well as theories about aura and photography, with particular reference to Walter Benjamin, to contextualize her work. As a professor of Transmedia at Syracuse University, Lombardia also harnesses concepts found in Convergence Culture 3, which provides a structure to discuss the intersection of old and new media. With the introduction of a chroma replacement app, VOIDX, she invites viewers to become participants, or even co-producers, throughout almost the entirety of the VOID exhibition. VOID provides a platform for radical participation over representation, pursuing a more truthful aspect of documentation. Jean Baudrillard's theories on the postmodern condition advance these arguments from a philosophical perspective emphasizing documentation and reality. His writings aid in understanding participants' interactions with the exhibition, specifically through the app. One is able to find deeper connections among the mass amounts of media not only being presented but also created in the exhibition. Montages of history, media, and time all come together in a myriad of ways highlighting Lombardia's post-conceptual oeuvre. These ideas will culminate throughout this thesis on the production of media, interactivity with technology, and the aura of photography." -- Abstract
