Lauro, Giacomo
Description:
Ruins of the Palace of Augustus and the Circus Maximus on the Palatine Hill. While the title seems to indicate that this was the Palace of Augustus, the image depicts the Domus Augustana.
Description:
The Palatine Hill is believed to be the site of the first settlements that became the city of Rome. The image depicts the ruins of the Domus Augustana, the principal residence of emperors from first through third centuries AD. The palace was located on the southern edge of the Palatine Hill and had an advantageous southern exposure and a view of Circus Maximus. The structure dates to the time of Domitian (A.D. 51-96) and was designed by his architect, Rabirius. Several emperors have added to this complex.
