Evolving from the Bell Telephone Company, the American Telephone & Telegraph Company created the first nationwide long-distance network with a commercially viable cost-structure (also known as AT&T Long Lines). Starting from New York, the network reached Chicago in 1892, and national long distance service reached San Francisco in 1915.
