Half page advertisement for the Gillette Safety Razor, Combination Set No. 00. The original Gillette Company was founded by King Camp Gillette (January 5, 1855 – July 9, 1932) as the American Safety Razor Company on September 28, 1901. He changed the company's name to Gillette Safety Razor Company in July 1902. Although several models of safety razor were already in existence, Gillette's innovation was the thin, inexpensive, disposable blade of stamped steel. Gillette is widely credited with inventing the “razor and blades” business model, where razors are sold cheaply to increase the market for blades, but in actuality he adopted this model after his competitors.
