Title:
With the Jawbone of an Ass
Creator:
Dart, Harry Grant, 1869-1938
Description:
Half page cartoon. In this cartoon, President Woodrow Wilson is wielding a weapon labeled Democracy against the economic corruption of the time. The symbolism is Biblical, from the story in Judges where Samson slew 1000 Philistines with the Jawbone of an Ass. The word Philistine has come to mean a crass materialistic person or one who does not value intellect, and Wilson had the reputation of being an intellectual, so the cartoon has meaning on several different levels. Most issues of Life had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue. This issue was the "Navy Number."
