Illustrations from Life

Title:
The Call
Creator:
Power-O'Malley, Michael Augustin, 1878-1946
Description:
Full color two page spread. It was unusual to have illustrations of Native Americans in Life. In 1916, perhaps there was some awareness because of two events. Carl Friederich Gustav Heye opened Museum of the American Indian in 1916 in New York City. And, the governor of New York designated the second Saturday in May to be American Indian Day in New York, starting in 1916. Most issues of Life had a theme that was introduced by the cover and reflected throughout the issue. The theme of this was the "American Number."
