Abstract:
American Sign Language is considered to be a “transient” form of
communication in the classroom, meaning the sign/symbol is performed and then is
gone. This notion is greatly increased in focused field / technical courses, such as
Introduction to Design Applications, which covers the Adobe Creative Suite. In this
instance, neither the student nor the interpreter are familiar with the software, practices of
design or the general art applications and methodologies involved, forcing a series of
repeating ASL conversations that cause significant delay between faculty, interpreters
and students.
Abstract:
In order to negate the communication delay, visual aids are required to enhance
the learning process of the hearing-impaired student. Currently, in most computer classes,
overhead projectors/displays are the primary mode of visual aids. Still, the difficultly lies
with a non-design-qualified interpreter who must successfully convey not only the
technical steps, or the how, to the student but also the concept, or why. A new form of
visual aids must be explored and developed for the classroom, catering to the visual
learning style of hearing-impaired students while also being easily accessible both within
and outside the classroom.
