Abstract:
This research is intended to encourage a positive future for corporate sponsorship of art in South Korea based on online observation, interviews and case studies. Today, arts and culture play an important role in their nations. However, government funds are insufficient to maintain the quality of arts in organizations; thus, private support such as corporate sponsorship is vital to arts organizations and artists. The problem is that corporate arts support has been insignificant in South Korea. After a look of the challenges facing corporate arts sponsorship in South Korea, the author discusses why corporate arts sponsorship is potentially important in South Korea. Specifically, reviewing how the collaboration of arts and business started and progressed throughout the history of South Korea compared to the U.S. and the U.K., this research indicates the needs to improve arts support policies and systems in South Korea. In addition, through online observation, interviews and international case studies regarding motivations, technology utilization and barriers in corporate arts sponsorship, the author identified opportunities for a successful partnership and audience engagement in the digital era between arts and business.
