Abstract:
Several issues stand in the way of good visual unity in comics. In addition to the established comics process, where lettering is done at the end of an assembly line, comic artists are sometimes not even given the dialogue to be placed in each panel. Ease of editing and translating also look to plain type and type containers. Collective works by several artists in a single volume can also be unified by typographic decisions, which may not always be the best for a particular comic. On the far end of the scale, it is also possible to become so concerned with the visual unity of a page that legibility and understandability are sacrificed. Good design, including adherence to the principles of Gestalt and typography can combat all of these issues, leading to a visually unified comic readers can enjoy.
