Abstract:
This thesis explores the American animated feature film industry’s focus on hyper-realism and
seemingly formulaic story structures. The history of animation in the United States is studied
from its beginnings to current day to determine the source of these trends. This thesis argues that
the medium of animation is largely not used to its potential in the United States and questions
why more expressive and artistic styles used in short films are not utilized in features. University
education’s role in facilitating the American animation industry’s hyper-realistic trends is also
discussed. This thesis serves to encourage animators to challenge mimesis expectations and use
animation rather as an extension of reality by reinstating it as an art form.
