Abstract:
“Gig posters and poster illustrations for the music industry serve not only as advertisement but also act as a chronicle of contemporary music history and represents the culture and heritage of various music genres, particularly rock and its sub-genres. They are evocative, with distinctive visual subject-matter, styles, and typography, and function as accessible art for music fans and concert goers. This genre of illustration continues to evolve and expand and has become not only a means of advertisement, but also a means of additional income for musicians and the poster artists who design them, as gig posters have become an increasingly sought-after merchandise item at concerts and on musician websites. This thesis will examine the history, technology, and design elements of poster illustration for the music industry in order to identify successful processes, design language, and stylistic elements. The visual component will seek to synthesize my analysis of successful gig posters into my own work and will comprise of a series of gig posters for selected rock genre bands and festivals, as well as a few merchandise designs that will correlate with some of the posters.” –Abstract
