Abstract:
“The anime and manga fandom subculture is composed of enthusiastic fans of the larger anime and manga culture. These groups exchange ideas and the creation of fan-works. Subcultures give these fans a place to develop a community of interest and social skills by communicating with people according to their interests. However, as groups distinct from the social mainstream, subcultures are vulnerable to social exclusion, leading to stigmatization of enthusiasts and the groups. In addition, the hierarchical relationship in subcultures makes it more difficult for people with insufficient knowledge of subcultures to participate. This thesis will collect, document, and analyze the perspectives, concerns, threats, opportunities, and actions of participants in the anime and manga fan community. From this information, this thesis will explore opportunities to use graphic design strategies to build fan-created communities for anime and manga subcultures that can help fans interact virtually online and in offline exhibitions to help enthusiasts participate and interact in the field. This will lead fans who want to become more involved in the anime and manga fandom subcultures find a group that suits them, where they feel welcome and can provide closer interaction with the original works and demonstrate their value in the subculture and society.” –Abstract
