Abstract:
“Come one, come all to this thesis spectacle, ‘Dragging Out the Last Laugh.’ Watch as this young artist struggles with the complexity of gender. Who is this young artist? Stepping out into the spotlight is Tessa Clawson, a plucky she/they, whose exploration of gender is the sock in the shoe of the clown who wears it. That clown is her and the ideas of gender are thought of as a performance, a drag show of glitz (Allaire). A performance that demands an audience, craving the display of womanhood. The clowns reject this performance and dons a different ideal. As the great Judith Butler once said, ‘I accept the idea that gender is an impersonation, that becoming gendered involves impersonating an ideal that nobody actually inhabits’ (187). In this aspect the clowns represent the impersonation of gender and how that is presented to the audience.” –Abstract
