Abstract:
“In this thesis I will determine to what extent time and perception influence one another in sequential art fight scenes by citing research from prominent comics scholars and forming my own analysis. This thesis proposes that the depiction of time and perspective are interrelated, and views fight scenes in comics through the lens of subjectivity and objectivity, or point of view. This thesis is divided into two primary sections focusing on perception and time, with examples for demonstration and analysis. This topic is of interest due to unique aspects of the medium requiring reader interpretation for durations of time, and how perspectives of characters affect the depiction of time and the reading experience. The conclusion is that perspective indeed affects graphic depictions of time, with the point of view able to change from one perspective to another at will, though authors can also choose to depict events from fairly neutral or objective viewpoints that negate depictions of time dilation. I synthesized existing scholarship into a useful reference for understanding and utilizing techniques for manipulating time alongside point of view in comics.” –Abstract
