Abstract:
"This thesis focuses on using gameplay to motivate climate change activism. It seeks to address the problem of how individuals support action to prevent climate change, but do not participate themselves. It contributes to existing video games about climate change by focusing on encouraging activism. It seeks to find a solution by applying Walter R. Fisher's theories of Narrative Paradigm to create a persuasive video game level. The thesis also explores methodology for applying Narrative Paradigm to game development. The visual component that accompanies this thesis seeks to encourage climate change activism by having individuals play through a day in the life of a character as they make choices. The experimental version creates a narrative based on gameplay to try and encourage activism. The experimental results were evaluated with a one-tailed Mann-Whitney U test. The experimental results proved not significant. However, the thesis did gather useful information on potential ways to encourage climate change activism. Additional ideation and development of the visual component may yield more significant results." --Abstract
