Abstract:
“When looking at Korean fashion in the global fashion context, it is important to discuss the history of traditional Korean motifs and patterns, their significance in Korean history, and how these illustrative historical records are being used in modern street fashion around the world due to the global rise in consumption of and fascination with Korean culture. In recent years, South Korea has seen a boom in the demand for export of its culture, including the phenomenal success of K-Pop, K-beauty, and K-fashion. By intertwining traditional Korean textiles and dress with modern popular culture, South Korea has not only been able to take its rightful place in the cultural zeitgeist of today, but it has also been able to preserve its cultural identity after decades of suppression and erasure. By analyzing both traditional and modern Korean fashion, how they co-exist today, and how pop culture has become the vehicle for keeping Korean heritage in demand around the globe, the role South Korean fashion designers and artists play in the global conversation surrounding textile art can finally be properly recognized.” –Abstract
