Abstract:
"The perception of Black hair in American society is directly correlated to its representation on screen in film and television. In a time where Black people are being persecuted greatly due to their appearance—hair included, it is imperative that positive and frequent depictions of Black hair are portrayed onscreen. Favorable representations onscreen are critical for the continued humanization of diversified aspects of Blackness because they challenge stereotypes and promote acceptance. This paper will explore prior representations of Black hair on screen from the 1900s to present day—identifying onscreen examples of Black hair and how it affected society during the respective time period. Ultimately, these explorations will prove that television affects perception, acceptance, or the lack thereof which overall affects the quality of Black life." --Abstract
