Abstract:
"Chinese American women frequently had weak characters in early American films. Since the 1990s, female films, as exemplified by the movie 'The Joy Luck Club', have defied this gendered stereotype and included several female characters who are courageous enough to overcome limitations. 'The Joy Luck Club', in contrast to prior films, begins with a conventional feudal social context and depicts the process by which women go from accepting their fate to waking consciousness and resisting tyranny, which contrasts with the melancholy picture of low status and helplessness in earlier films. Despite Wayne Wang's contentious portrayal of these pictures throughout the last 30 years, 'The Joy Luck Club' marks a turning point for the whole American cinema industry. It increased the number of roles given to Chinese American women in movies and the number of acting gigs available to them." --Abstract
