Abstract:
“This paper looks at how virtual YouTubers (VTubers) in Japan, who were originally in the entertainment industry, are now being considered for online education. The author uses theories of celebrity culture, media studies, and online education to explore how VTubers intersect with Japanese pop culture and affect higher education. The author studied three higher education institutions within video games that use VTubers for online education. The findings suggest that VTubers can enhance online education by increasing student engagement, promoting intercultural exchange, and providing access to diverse learning resources. The rise of VTubers also reflects a cultural shift towards virtual identities and highlights the need for further research on the social and ethical implications of these emerging technologies.” –Abstract
