Abstract:
“How does a visual metaphor based on the elements of nature influence the audience’s emotion in animation? To address this issue, the author explores the relationship between the visual metaphor of natural objects and the audience’s emotion in animation’s storytelling by analyzing the films directed by Miyazaki Hayao, John Hughes, and Bon Joon-ho. Natural objects that are closely related to human life can provide audiences a fresh perspective of visualizing time’s passing, which can be tied to evoke the audience’s emotion. Another typical function of understanding the application of visual metaphors in films is ‘communicating themes’ effectively to audiences. In this case, combining the natural objects with visual metaphors would generate different results which depend on what kinds of themes the author intends to convey.” –Abstract
