Abstract:
“This thesis aims to explore the influence of abstract modern art, specifically abstract expressionism and experimental animation, on visual development and concept art created for mass-marketed animated content and how these aesthetics can also contribute to the final style of an animated film. The role of abstraction in stylization will be analyzed as a method for creating unique and novel characters and environments. Examples from popular animated shows and films such as Disney’s Alice in Wonderland (1951), Disney Pixar’s Soul (2020), and Cartoon Network’s Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends will be examined. This research will then be used to inform the visual development for a story pitch for a 2D animation project.” –Abstract
