Abstract:
"There is an evident need to advance the dialog surrounding the improvement of correctional facilities, specifically juvenile detention centers. The purpose of this thesis was to determine the degree to which interior design can positively impact rehabilitation processes at juvenile justice centers. This thesis explored subtopics such as healing environments, recidivism, and design theory as a foundation for reimagining the traditional juvenile justice facility. Additionally, essential human needs, mental health management, and evidence-based rehabilitative techniques were evaluated. Research methods include literature review, expert interviews, case studies, and content analysis. The ultimate goal of the study was to develop a set of design standard recommendations for juvenile correctional facilities. An evidence-based studio project was completed to serve as a case study for the application of the developed design standards in a juvenile detention center." --Abstract
