Abstract:
"Artworks provide compelling articulation of the internal landscape of psychic trauma. Photography is an especially exacting medium with which to render trauma as the camera is a mnemonic device, capturing and processing internal and external events. The photograph is explicit in its documentation. Dioramas, photographs, photomontages, videos and low-relief assemblages provide artifacts of psychic trauma, an otherwise predominantly invisible disorder. The subjects of The Reunion of Broken Parts are me and an alter ego, Zelda Bravo. Alter egos have historically expressed cognitive dissonance and psychological dissociation. Precedents include the photographs of Claude Cahun and the paintings of Frida Kahlo. The interior furors of the traumatized subjects are turned inside-out, exhibiting hidden vistas that beckon expression." --Abstract
