Abstract:
“In American LGBTQ culture, the gay bar has played an important role as a refuge and comfortable home for the LGBTQ community. However, due to the the pandemic, the prevalence of social media, and the rise of LGBTQ equality, the number of gay bars is decreasing every year. This thesis aims to study the evolution of the gay bar in response to the needs of the new era and study how interior design promotes the connection of the gay community. This thesis adopts the methods of literature review, interview, observation and focus group. Through the analysis of the history of the gay bar and the influence of social media on gay people in the literature review, this thesis determines the research direction of gay bar to become a third place for gay men by reshaping the entertainment value, strengthening the information value and sense of belonging. Through interviews and observations, this thesis acquired gay men's social behavior habits data and corresponding preferences of environmental needs today. In addition, by summarizing observation and focus group data combined with social theory analysis, this thesis identifies flexibility and fluidity, eye contact, good vision, and environmental creativity as important factors that influence gay man's social behavior and social environment. The significance of this study is to explore the evolution of the gay bar in the new era, as well as the potential impact of interior design on people's social behavior.” –Abstract
