Abstract:
"This thesis explores Mel Brooks' qualifications as an auteur based on Andrew Sarris' definitions of an auteur director. This thesis focuses on three of the directors Brooks' parodied (John Huston, James Whale, and Alfred Hitchcock), using the same criteria of auteur theory. The aim of this thesis is to show that while his films are parodies, satires, and homages to genres and directors, Mel Brooks imbues his films with of visual and thematic elements that qualify him as an auteur director. Furthermore, this thesis shows how Mel Brooks films relate to the current state of the film industry, and how his films influenced the approach to my own thesis film." --Abstract
