Abstract:
“The Hmong are storytellers. For centuries Hmong people have created intricate textiles to communicate with each other and to preserve ancient folklore and the history of Hmong people. Today the practice of textile art and cultural dress is dying— not only in America but also in the areas of its origin. However, in the last decade Generation Z and Millennial Hmong Americans are rediscovering the importance of their culture and the need to sustain and preserve their cultural textiles and dress. Through this rediscovery, they have created new and modern means of preserving their heritage. This Thesis research will focus on the findings of how Generation Z and Millennial Hmong’s in America are preserving cultural Hmong textiles and dress. The exploration of this project is significant because it reveals the importance and necessity of cultural representation in the fashion industry. The research put into this thesis is also significant because it displays the spirit of young Hmong Americans who are taking the initiative to preserve their own culture in the midst of living in western culture. These young Hmong Americans are fulfilling the role of the generations before them by creating new cultural textile and clothing practices to pass on to the coming generations. By redefining preservation of culture, Generation Z and Millennial Hmong Americans are showing the world that the goal of preserving one’s culture is not simply to keep cultural practices the same, but to evolve them while still holding true to the original value. Through extensive primary and secondary research, studio experimentation, and the documentation of different design processes, this thesis research will lead to the completion of an eight-piece collection. This collection will be centered on the methods and practices of preserving and sustaining Hmong Textiles and cultural dress used by Generation Z and Millennial Hmong’s of America.” -- Abstract
