Abstract:
"This thesis delves into the depiction of fatherhood dynamics in movies from the lenses of two films, Boyhood (Linklater) and The Tree of Life (Malick). It makes the distinction between traditional fatherhood and modern fatherhood and emphasizes the positive effects that modern fatherhood can have on children. It focuses on the depiction of the individual fatherhood dynamics that unfold in each of the films and what their characteristics are, and how they relate to the idea of hegemonic masculinity. It also analyzes the effects the different kinds of fathers have on their children and how they encourage or diminish the child's ability to develop into full human beings. The paper also discusses the failings that any parent as a human being has and how the depiction of that facet itself can influence the viewer in certain ways. The paper also analyzes what Boyhood gets right in the depiction of fatherhood and how it can inform future filmmakers in crafting their depiction of fatherhood." --Abstract
