Abstract:
"This paper explores the impact and transformation that death brings to young children in coming-of-age movies. Death is an unavoidable thing in human growth. Lives are passing away all the time in this world. It is my concern that what the impact is when these things happen to young children. Children have no understanding of life at a very young age, and for them, the passing of life is a common thing. In films, children's growth is often linked to the loss of life. For example, in Lynne Ramsay's Small Deaths and Anthony Chen's Ah Ma, the stories are generally contrasted with the way other people treat life and the protagonist to highlight the inner growth of the protagonist. Children's education should not be neglected. They need the freedom to explore uncharted territories to satisfy their curiosity about the world, but sometimes too much space can lead to losing control in certain areas. I want to make this exact point through my thesis film and paper - to value the way children treat life." -- Abstract
