Abstract:
This thesis explores the symbolic of wedding dresses in the east and the west in terms of cultural exchange, global perspectives, and national identities. China is a country with a five-thousand-year history of civilization. Chinese clothes embody Chinese traditional culture and national spirit. It is worth noting that, in 1927, Meiling Song, the bride of the first President of the Republic of China, wore a white wedding dress for her wedding. Chinese brides used to wear red dresses for the wedding in the past, but after Song wore the western wedding dress, many western clothing cultures came into the Chinese market, and many Chinese brides chose the white wedding dress. The change of the Chinese bride's dress in the wedding ceremony is the communication among the eastern culture, the western culture, art, and commerce. However, the costumes of various countries are the embodiment of national culture and history. They carry the status symbols of various nationalities. For Chinese people, returning to the Chinese tradition and exploring the traditional costume of China is very important for the future development of Chinese costumes.
The primary research focuses on an interview of 50 Chinese brides and an online survey with 1000 Chinese brides through Monkey Survey which will indicate the detail demands of customers in China and reveal how do they think about the combination of traditional Chinese elements and modern wedding dresses. The information of development and change of Chinese and western wedding dress culture will be found in detail through the current factual data.

Keywords: Chinese bridalwear, Chinese women, traditional wedding, national identity, millennium customs.
