Abstract:
"Binge, Purge, Repeat: An Examination of Eating Disorders in Film from the 2000s to the 2010s discusses how films have approached depicting and discussing eating disorders from the 2000s to the 2010s. The paper will introduce the history of eating disorder portrayals in film as well as examine a variety of movies pertaining to this topic, including but not limited to Thin (2006), Starving in Suburbia (2014), and To The Bone (2017). Additionally, the paper will analyze the difference in portrayals when it comes to made-for-television films versus box office feature films produced in the United States. Historically, made-for-television films have approached these topics with nuance and sensitivity whereas box office films have instead trivialized eating disorders. The paper will also conduct an in-depth evaluation of each portrayal of eating disorders and the protagonist's journey. The conclusion of the paper will address the elements that filmmakers must take into account should they want to create a film about eating disorders, as well as state areas-for-improvement in box office films." -- Abstract
