Abstract:
This project will be analyzing the deep social and psychological problems reflected by the prosecution of sorcerers happened in China and how these problems still affect modern Chinese society. China remained a feudal society until 1840. The traditional culture and philosophy which dominated China for thousands years and the political system constituted by bureaucracy and monarchy closely contacted and influenced each other. The essay will focus on exploring how the normal people’s life and mental state deeply affected by political structure and social conditions of ancient Chinese society, and how the social anxiety and group psychology finally become the crucial reasons of social chaos. The abnormal development of the power structure led to social upheavals, which made all classes of society feel confused and panic. The oppressed people of the lowest class transferred their hatred and desire of power to the weaker, led to large-scale chaos and mistreatment in the society. What make these originally innocent normal people become “evil” and start to oppress others? In modern Chinese society, the events that led by similar psychosocial issues are still happening. Exploring the problems of psychosocial and group anxiety behind them and how these problems related to Chinese unique culture is meaningful for social progress.
