Abstract:
As medicine advances, people suffering from chronic illnesses do not only cope, but can thrive and still enjoy independence. With evidence based design research, existing facilities are sustainably retrofitted so that sufferers and physicians go through treatment effectively. People suffering from mental health illnesses such as schizophrenia, have more treatment options than ever before, and are accommodated with more inspiring facilities and spaces.
Abstract:
This study comparatively observes the institutional and residential environments for people of schizophrenia in the Cayman Islands. This location currently offers off-island treatment only. Because of the off-island treatments, patients feel displaced and away from family members. Through research and informed design this work aims to find a design solution that meets the needs of sufferers and their families. The ultimate intention of this study is designing a facility in the Cayman Islands, where careful interior design promotes stable behavior, inspires users and provides for the current need for such a facility.
Abstract:
Information gathered includes: demographic and geographic studies, interviews, case studies, site visits and a review of relevant psychiatric and design literature. These were cross-referenced and translated into evidence-based design solutions that improve user experience, staff efficiency, and patient rehabilitation and integration in society.
