Abstract:
This thesis investigates the contemporary stress factors created by four
diverse generations (Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation X, and Generation Y)
in the American office. Each generation has varied work-style and workplace
preferences that need to be recognized in an office environment. Using restorative
interior design approaches, this thesis explores the design of interior environments as a
catalyst to reduce stress and improve successful communication in today’s
generationally integrated workplace. Investigative tools utilized for data collection
include a literature review, case study analysis of existing workplace
environments, employee surveys and industry professional interviews. This
investigation provides the foundation for the development of a prescriptive
set of interior design guidelines. These guidelines emphasize in-depth
applications utilizing restorative design principles. These principles
impact the innate attributes of human-nature and are used as part of a
multifaceted solution to increase successful communication and reduce
stress in current and future generationally diverse work environments.
