Abstract:
Over the past 50 years the advancements made in technology have been unmatched in
the history of civilization (Green Web). In my rural hometown of Kentucky the advancements have
been delayed and the inhabitants are slower and more intimate. Now, living in the city of Atlanta, I
feel anxious about the urban landscape, the speed, and the technology that abounds. Through
my work I attempt to understand why I have these feelings and to help reconcile this sensation.
Over the course of two years I have explored the dichotomy between technology and nature,
urban and rural, and biological and digital. I have experimented with multiple techniques and
materials. Many different art historical movements greatly influenced my work because of their
reaction to social change. The final approach and a better understanding have resulted in my
body of thesis work entitled Digital Displacement. The body of work consists of a series of
domestic specimens that retain the aesthetics from an earlier time and place yet function with a
newer technology indicative of the city. The household items address the idea of comfort and
nostalgia while allowing the advantages of a newer technology. The pieces help me to cope with
the ever-changing environment. This document will examine the art historical, technical, and
theoretical aspects of Digital Displacement. It will provide a written understanding of the pieces that have taken physical form. The body of work along with this document will foster change,
acceptance, and comfort in the city and technology for the audience and myself.
