Abstract:
This thesis is intended to inform readers of the current state of cultural property law for
three forms of cultural property: art, antiquities and historic resources. It attempts to identify and
rationalize gaps in cultural property law regarding protection for privately-owned cultural
property, and explore opportunities for more universal protection. Further protection would
likely assure better stewardship of our country’s cultural property, thus preventing manipulation,
deterioration and destruction of important cultural property by private parties.
