Abstract:
As society becomes increasingly reliant upon technology, the use of printed visual media as a
source for recording public and private events has transitioned from a mere novelty to an integral
aspect of daily life. Documentation of the everyday is not a new concept, but one that has
steadily gained in popularity over the past hundred years, becoming more accessible in the early
to mid 1900s. Centered on the snapshot, Mnemonic investigates the family photograph as it
relates to memory systems, and how it has changed the state of the photographic referent
previously defined by critic Roland Barthes. Supported by Lockean theory regarding memory as
identity and Sigmund Freud’s Mystic Writing Pad as a metaphor for the mind, Mnemonic
challenges the viewer to find the familiar in the unfamiliar, ultimately presenting the photograph
as a surrogate for memory.
