Abstract:
Reveries & Other Fantasies; Conjuring Architectural Escapes focuses of the idea of
constructedness. The authority and mimetic qualities of photography are questioned through the use
of repetition, scale, style, point of view and mise en abyme. By drawing parallels with the literary
strategies adopted by Italo Calvino in his novel If On A Winter’s Night A Traveller, this thesis
investigates how a sequence of images can create a narrative that undermines its own truthfulness
while asking the viewer to still suspend disbelief.
