Abstract:
"This thesis will discuss how the process of painting is a meditation for me, creating calm in myself through the work. Through gestural layering of paint, I am able to process various aspects of my personal life and also of the greater human condition. It compares various theories from abstract painting history to my own practice, with specific artists highlighted that choose nature as their subject, mainly Agnes Martin and Lee Krasner. This thesis explores the wonder of nature as a point for meditation, methods of meditation, and how I and other artists have used these methods in painting processes, ultimately in a search for understanding of the larger world and how we fit into it. In this thesis body of work, I have abstracted nature in various ways to produce compositions that refine a place down into its essence, and in doing so, find a peace and balance in myself."
