Abstract:
The topic of “Womanhood” is one that I have been most interested in over the past few
years. This interest and understanding of womanhood has influenced my desire to work on such
topics in many of my artistic projects, such as my entrance portfolio entitled "Chain of a
Woman". Womanly characteristics such as mystery, unpredictability, elusiveness, attractive
bodies, long hair, and smooth skin are all representative of the most beautiful objects to paint in
nature. It is atypical and unusual for female heroines to stand out and be represented as figures of
power in history. However, a select few present a profound and meaningful specimen for further
investigation. The name "Thorns of a Rose: The Power of Beauty" expresses how, not unlike a
rose, a woman's femininity is beautiful to behold, but the thorns that it possesses can add a
dangerous effect, just like the strengths that women use to protect themselves. So in essence,
their beauty is powerful. In my 12- piece series, I not only present a horizontal investigation
(cross-regional/cultural display personified in similar time periods, ignoring traditional time
references), but also represent different periods of vertical comparison (allowing each figure to actively represent her unique culture, all the while sharing some similar characteristics).
