Abstract:
I am a child of two worlds. Reality anchors me in one world; technology anchors me in
the other. By using technology such as the Internet, social networking and image
sharing, I am able to maintain a connection with my friends and family back in Thailand.
In the photographic series Intersecting the Parallels, I project and interact with images
created by my family and friends and shared via social networking sites. Through these
composited interactions I address issues of family, memory, distance and surrogacy.
Through an examination of Homi Bhahbaʼs interpretation of cultural “in-between” space
and Christian Metzʼs discussion of the photograph as Freudian fetish or substitute, I
examine the nature of physical and emotional displacement in contemporary culture.
