Abstract:
"This thesis takes an in-depth look at the four horsemen of the apocalypse described in the Christian Bible's final installment, The Book of Revelation. They are described as physical manifestations of Conquest (or Pestilence), War, Famine, and Death, all of which are nightmarish catastrophes that have haunted mankind throughout history. As times have changed, so have the interpretations of the four horsemen. This document analyzes the development of their portrayal from early Medieval manuscripts all the way up to modern depictions in film and video games. Not only has their artistic depiction evolved but the devastating concepts they represent have as well. Examining statistics and the historical contexts of Pestilence, War, Famine, and Death from early biblical times to the present-day, this thesis goes through the process of redesigning a modern adaptation of the four horsemen for the purpose of 3D animation in a real time rendering engine (UE4). The aim is to demonstrate the importance of research to inform character design choices as well as address the challenges involved in depicting detailed 3D modeled characters that represent concepts that are just as relevant now as they were at their conception." --Abstract
