Abstract:
"The theory of the uncanny was raised in the mid-1800s but was not explored until the early 1900s when Ernst Jentsch first wrote about the subject. Soon after psychologists such as Sigmund Freud and Jacques Lacan elaborated on this sense of uncanniness. This elaboration also includes variations of the uncanny, like the uncanny valley, that have been explored by many philosophers and psychologists such as Tzvetan Todorov and Barbara Creed. On the opposite side of the uncanny, there is the psychological theory of kawaii that defines the specific physical features that serve as the key to stimulating the perception of 'cuteness' in human behavior. Through researching the topics of the uncanny and kawaii, as well as diving into case studies from three different art medias, I will prove that an unsettling, yet cute character already exists. With the support of my case studies I will then define and create my own uncanny kawaii archetype character." --Abstract
