Abstract:
"The switch from network cable to online media consumption and binge watching has changed audience viewing habits from passive to active. This shift has inevitably had an effect on episodic title design as it is no longer sufficient for a title sequence to simply be an introduction or visual representation of the show. The skip intro feature on most streaming platforms has made it extremely easy for viewers to skip repetitive opening credits. It is now necessary to have title sequences that push the narrative for each episode or reveal new information to keep audiences engaged. For shows that do not want to invest in constantly evolving title sequences but still want to engage with viewers, releasing the title sequence online prior to the series premiere as a promotional piece is a viable option. Title sequences have never been used as trailers before nor have they traditionally been viewed as an extension of the narrative so these changes may well lead to a completely new understanding of the fundamental purpose of episodic title design." --Abstract
