Abstract:
"The abstractions featured within the portfolio titled Just Beneath the Surface contain layers of motion blurred images, or light paintings, that serve as a mode of expression and personal agency for the artist. The layers are then blended together through a digital process that highlights aspects of each unique layer, effectively transforming the original objective landscape into one of ambiguity. The process effectively becomes the subject. This thesis examines photographic abstraction as a mode of personal expression and catharsis for the artist, while simultaneously providing the viewer with an ambiguous visual space to explore via their own experience. Analysis of the portfolio examines photographic abstraction through a lens of technical inspiration from painters and photographers that contribute to the methodology behind the digital process. The scope of the portfolio is presented within the context of contemporary photography as well as the current social landscape that in many ways mirrors the social turmoil of post WWII America, which saw the rise of Abstract Expressionism. Contemporary themes of Place and Memory are explored in terms of artistic intent and visual representation." --Abstract
