Abstract:
"This thesis paper will stage an inquiry into the visualisation of conflict in Himalayan documentaries, particularly by western filmmakers. This explanatory paper showcases the 'conflict with nature' and 'conflict with society,' and will be supported by research and critical analysis of three films— 'Meru' (2015) by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, 'Sherpa' (2015) by Jennifer Peedom and 'The Conquest of Everest' (1953) by George Lowe. The Himalayas are a political entity as much as a natural entity. Thus, to better understand the nature of conflict, it is imperative to introduce the reader to ethnographic and adventure film, as well as illustrate the different modes of documentaries. The paper will culminate with the author's own experiences in filming his MFA thesis documentary 'Rabari: The People of the Leopard.'" --Abstract
