Abstract:
"This thesis expounds on the lack of characterization and representation for black characters in animation. When viewing a character in an animated film or show viewers are drawn to characters that look like them in appearance and lifestyle. For this train of thought, it is a negative and positive based on what role the character is playing in the animation and what they look like. The issue is that there aren't that many positive representations or characterizations of black characters in animation, because of this it causes a disruption on identity. Leading to common stereotypes of black characters. This thesis will explore academic surveys and studies on racial representation in animation. Further, the elementary is participating in a survey on racial profiling in animation. This information will be beneficial to animators when creating a character of color and able to expand skin color, body type, facial features, and personality traits. These academic surveys and studies in addition to the elementary school survey will be analyzed to further investigate how to positively represent
African Americans in animation." -- Abstract
